FACTS: Gastric ulcers are common in horses. This prevalence is estimated to be from 50% to 90%, depending on the population and type of athletic activity the horses are engaged in.

Gastric ulcers can affect any horse at any age, including foals which are highly susceptible, because they secrete gastric acid as early as 2 days of age and with no solid feed matter in the stomach, can amplify the acid even more so.

In adult horses, gastric ulcers occur more frequently in horses that perform athletic activities, such as racehorses (80-90%), endurance horses (70%), and show / sales horses (60%). Researchers have found that exercise increases gastric acid production, as the acidic fluid in the stomach splashes and exposes the upper, more vulnerable portion of the stomach (squamous mucosa) to acidity and decreases blood flow to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

In a natural grazing situation, horses require a steady flow of acid for digestion, so a horse's stomach produces acid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week--up to 9 gallons of acidic fluid per day, even when not eating. In a natural, high-roughage diet, the acid is buffered by both feed and saliva.

Other risk factors for developing gastric ulcers include physical and environmental stress such as transport stress and stall confinement (intermittent feeding & lack of exposure to other horses). Studies have Shown that a few hours of transport can induce gastric ulceration in horses that had none prior to departure, as determined by gastroscopy.

Finally, chronic administration of some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as  racing medications like phenylbutazone, benamine, dex can irritate the stomach and even flunixin meglumine or ketoprofen can decrease the production of the stomach's protective mucus layer, making it more susceptible to ulcers. The majority of horses with gastric ulcers do not show outward clinical signs. They have more subtle signs, such as: Poor appetite, Dullness, Attitude changes, Decreased performance, Reluctance to train, Poor body condition, Poor hair coat, Weight loss, Excessive time spent lying down (even on back), Low grade colic, Loose feces, Grinding teeth etc. Note that horses that look completely healthy can also have gastric ulcers.

GastroMax 3 is a highly effective inhibitor of acid secretion in horses, creating a favorable environment in order to prevent ulcers. GastroMax is proven to prevent ulcers and their reoccurence even during training, not just to alleviate their clinical signs. GastroMax contains omeprazole, sodium acid carbonate and L-Glutamine. Is intended for use in healthy horses. May be used in horses that weigh at least 600 pounds. May be used safely in breeding stallions. Give 1/4 tube daily to horses weighing 600-1200 lbs. For horses over 1200 lbs, give 1/2 tube daily. Tube.
